Erin Hanson: Alchemist of Color Exhibition

Art Exhibition at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum

Thursday, November 2, 2023

Join art enthusiasts of every kind at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard California for the latest exhibition: Erin Hanson: Alchemist of Color.

This art exhibition showcases coastal and floral oil paintings created in Hanson’s open impressionist style. Each piece bursts with vibrant color and celebrates the contrasts of light and shadow.

All of Erin Hanson’s paintings are created from a limited palette mixed from five pure pigments. The depth of color, delicate gradation, and complexity of technique all go to show how Hanson earned the title of “the alchemist of color.”

Hanson's oil paintings are preplanned, with a palette mixed before the artist lays down her first brushstroke. After this, each stroke is placed precisely, with little to no overlap, resulting in striking color. Nature’s wild beauty is showcased perfectly with this technique, the power of which comes through when one stands in front of these canvases.

Erin Hanson: Alchemist of Color runs from October 5th through December 28th, 2023 at Channel Islands Maritime Museum.

About Erin

ERIN HANSON has been painting in oils since she was 8 years old. As a teenager, she apprenticed at a mural studio where she worked on 40-foot-long paintings while selling art commissions on the side. After being told it was too hard to make a living as an artist, she got her degree in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley. Afterward, Erin became a rock climber at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Inspired by the colorful scenery she was climbing, she decided to return to her love of painting and create one new painting every week.

She has stuck to that decision, becoming one of the most prolific artists in history, with over 3,000 oil paintings sold to eager collectors. Erin Hanson’s style is known as "Open Impressionism" and is taught in art schools worldwide. With millions of followers, Hanson has become an iconic, driving force in the rebirth of impressionism, inspiring thousands of other artists to pick up the brush.
