Experiencing Japan’s sakura season was a highlight of my spring travels. Kyoto’s weeping cherry trees, with their cascading pink blossoms, were breathtaking. I loved the variations in color and shape, each tree uniquely arching over pathways or framing tranquil ponds. Carefully placed in Japanese gardens, they created a perfect harmony between nature and design. In my painting, I aimed to capture both their fleeting beauty and the serenity of Kyoto in spring.

There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. When there is a light mist in the air, the picture becomes moody and intriguing. This painting was inspired by my last trip to Carmel.

Oregon's Willamette Valley has more irises in bloom in more color variations than I have ever seen anywhere else. My favorite place to hunt for irises to paint is at Schreiner's Iris Garden, where there are hundreds of varieties. But, sometimes, my favorite to paint is just the classic blue iris.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. Driving north along Highway 1 from Cambria, on the way to Hearst Castle, you see some of the most beautiful scenery along the Pacific Coast. I have always been drawn to the romantic shapes and multi-colored bark of the eucalyptus tree, and the way these trees were framed by the summer-colored hills beyond made me pull my van around and circle back so I could get some reference shots to paint.

One of the things I love about living in Oregon's Willamette Valley is visiting autumn harvest festivals. (We never had these in Southern California!) The harvest festival at Red Berry Barn has a hay ride, feeding zoo, giant slides, bouncy houses, pumpkin patch, and even a huge room full of corn kernels that you can bury yourself in (no joke.) But my favorite part of visiting Red Berry Barn every year is photographing their sunflower fields. This painting captures everything I love about a beautiful October day in Oregon with blue skies and a crisp coolness in the air. There is one grove of cypress trees near Carmel that is the most beautiful grove of cypress trees in the whole Monterey Peninsula. I visit them every time I go to Monterey. I must have painted them a dozen times already, but I love capturing their graceful branches in changing light and changing seasons. I spent two days exploring the lavender fields around Valensole, Provence. This region of France has steep-edged, high plateaus where lavender is grown. With dawn sunlight beginning at 5AM and lasting until 10PM, I had very long days to soak up the beautiful colors and changing light of French lavender fields. I also saw the occasional sunflower field, which was an added bonus!

I visited France last year to follow in the footsteps of Monet and van Gogh. I spent a day in Vetheuil, a small town near Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted for a time. Everywhere I looked, I saw a painting before my eyes. I discovered this scene down a short trail down to the Seine river, where I saw a family of geese enjoying the early morning light. The landscape was filled with delicate hues of blue and green, and I was inspired to capture the magic of the scene with my brush.

This October, I discovered a grove of sunflowers blooming in the Oregon countryside against a cobalt sky. The flower stalks stretched high over my head, and I felt completely enveloped by sun-lit hues of yellow, green, and blue. I took dozens of photos to use as reference later in my studio, and then, using impasto strokes of oil paint, I laid my paint strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. The result captures the spirit of a late summer day in the northwest.

I love driving the winding roads through Paso Robles wine country. At the high elevations, I pass by sun-lit vineyards and open orchards, and when the roads dip down in the valleys, I pass beneath overhanging oak trees and hanging moss, and I can hear the sound of water trickling by in the nearby stream. This painting captures this view of Paso from between the oak trees, where crystalline light casts long shadows across the road.

I visited Kyoto, Japan, this year to photograph the Sakura season--Japanese cherry trees in bloom. This painting captures the view from Philosopher's Path, a winding walkway of large stones that traverses the width of Kyoto. The path follows a water-filled canal, and cherry trees overhang the entire walkway. This painting captures the peaceful beauty of cherry trees at dusk.

I stayed one night in an old stone bungalow near Bordeaux, and I woke the next morning before dawn to wander the gardens. Tucked away in a secluded grove of tangerine trees, I found a giant stone pond with water lilies blooming on the still water. The slowly lifting fog gave the vista a quiet, subdued tone, and I wandered through the quiet land, discovering unexpected marble statues, benches, and arbors, nibbling on fresh-picked plums and peaches as I went.

Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

This petite work captures a beautiful sunrise seen from one of Montecito's beautiful beaches. Montecito (near Santa Barbara) has beautiful coastlines edged with dramatic boulders and elegant, long-leafed palm trees. Dodging the waves to get around a rocky outcropping (and only getting completely soaked once), I found this secluded beach and watched the sun rise over the distant mountain range.

Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. Inspired by van Gogh's love for sunflowers and Monet's garden (he created his own water lily garden so he could paint in his own backyard), I planted my own sunflower field last spring. This is a painting of a sunflower bouquet gathered from my field. I searched for heirloom seeds that would grow the large-headed sunflowers that make such great paintings. I draped an orange cloth behind the sunflowers for a moody, impressionistic look. My brush strokes are laid down in thick, expressive strokes, and I used a limited palette of only five oil paint colors.
