3D TEXTURED REPLICAS
Meet the next generation of fine art prints.
Erin Hanson's 3D Textured Replicas are the most realistic painting reproductions on the market and are almost indistinguishable from the original oil painting from a short distance away. They capture the texture of every impasto brushstroke and weave of the canvas, as well as the vibrant colors of her original works of art. If you are looking for a reproduction of Erin Hanson's impressionist oil paintings, you have come to the right place!
Erin Hanson's limited edition 3D Textured Replicas feature:
Science applied to Art.
Making giclees obsolete with the greatest technological leap since the colored printer, Erin Hanson's 3D Textured Replicas are the closest thing to an original painting. Erin Hanson developed the technology of textured art prints using state-of-the-art 3D scanners and printers from Switzerland and Germany. First, we scan the original oil painting using a giant Cruse scanner that fills an entire room, located right next to Erin's painting studio. This gives us an incredibly high-resolution 3D model of the artwork. Next, using a high-tech, flatbed printer from Switzerland, we create the 3D Textured Replica using UV-cured ink that dries hard like acrylic paint. The height of the print is meticulously built up, layer by layer, until over 20 layers of ink have been laid down, and the depth and texture of the Replica match the original painting exactly. Finally, we print several layers of protective varnish right on top.
Erin devoted three years to perfecting the technology of 3D art printing in a quest to create a fine art print that not only captured her vibrant colors but also reproduced the texture crucial to her artistic vision. The rhythms of texture in her luscious, impasto oil paintings communicate the movement and joy she finds in nature. Erin Hanson's groundbreaking 3D Textured Replicas provide the texture that is necessary to experience the full impact and movement of her work.
How are 3D Textured Replicas Made?
Step 1
First, we scan Erin's original oil painting using our state-of-the-art Cruse 3D scanner. This allows us to create a highly detailed digital texture map of the oil painting. The 3D scanner photographs the artwork from five different lighting angles in one-pixel-wide segments.
Step 2
Next, we use advanced 3D software to manipulate the layers and create a 3D model of the painting that includes every tiny ridge of the oil painting, down to the minute texture of the canvas weave. The color is captured in 48-bit color, which is six times more color information than an SLR camera.
Step 3
We print the 3D Textured Replicas onto Dibond panels (two pieces of aluminum sandwiched around foam core), to give the replica a permanent, hard substrate. Our SwissQ printer lays down 18 layers of UV-hardened ink, gradually building up the height of the brush strokes until the replica has the same texture as the original oil painting. The color and varnish layers are then printed on top of the texture.
Step 4
Erin Hanson personally inspects every 3D Textured Replica to ensure the texture and color are as close to the original as possible. There are many variables we tweak and adjust to make each replica perfect.
Step 5
Each 3D Textured Replica is framed in your choice of floater frame or plein air frame. All our moldings are custom-made overseas to Erin's specifications. The "EH" floater frames have genuine 23kt gold leaf or silver leaf on the top face and dark, almost-black pebbled sides.
Step 6
Erin Hanson uses gold enamel to personally sign and number her Limited Edition 3D Textured Replicas. The limited edition replicas also come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The limited editions are limited to only 100 replicas per painting.
In the Home
Erin Hanson's 3D Textured Replicas are the most realistic oil painting reproductions you can buy. You can see the light glinting off the impasto texture of the brush strokes. The 3D Textured Replica has actual depth and dimension -- not just the illusion of texture, but actual brush strokes created by the 3D printer.
The color of 3D Textured Replicas is vibrant and alive, printed with the highest gamut of UV-cured inks available. The result is a reproduction that is truly the next best thing to an original.
Varnish is applied as the final layer, providing UV protection and giving the 3D Textured Replica a slight glossiness and sheen that looks like an oil painting.
It is easy to be fooled when you see a 3D Textured Replica in person -- even here at The Erin Hanson Gallery, the staff often get confused between which is the replica and which is the original!
We are so sure you will love your 3D Textured Replica, we offer a 30-day, money-back guarantee.
Collector Feedback
"We've had a wall with art lights waiting for the right piece for 5 years since our remodel. It looks fantastic, and with the lights you can really appreciate the texture and colors. It's great you have these replicas that come so close to the original so more people can enjoy them."
LOS GATOS, CA
"The acrylic 3D print is so detailed we can hardly tell the difference from an original Erin Hanson oil painting. Amazing technology to be able to capture the depth of texture in this print. "
ENCINITAS, CA
"Oh my goodness! I love it!! The 3-D process is amazing—it looks like an original because of the light catching the texture of the brushstrokes. The colors are radiant. I debated about getting the smaller size, but I’m so glad I went with the larger. It is the right proportion for this hallway wall that joins my main room with the dining/kitchen area. I’m absolutely thrilled!"

Questions & Answers
How is the texture created?
Unlike other "3D prints" on the market right now (these spray a thin layer of clear texture over a flat canvas print), Erin Hanson's 3D Textured Replicas build up the actual texture of the original painting using 18 layers of resin-like ink and then print the color on top of the texture layer. In other words, the oil painting is reproduced as a highly-detailed, 3D model of the painting, which looks like a pure white version of the painting (see left.) The color layers are applied on top of the texture model, which makes it look nearly identical to an actual painting. A final layer of UV-protective varnish is added, making the replica look even more like an original oil painting.
How is the color created?
Erin Hanson's museum-quality scanner captures her original paintings in 48-bit color, which is six times more color information than a high-end SLR camera. You can see in this example image how much more color information is captured by the scanner (above) compared to a camera image of the same painting (below.)
Hanson's state-of-the-art SwissQ 3D printer prints a much wider color gamut than standard CMYK printers, because it uses an additional five colors that allow the printers to reproduce vibrant purples, oranges, and reds. The colors you see on the screen are nearly identical to the colors you will see on your 3D Replica.
The bottom line is that we can create 3D and canvas print reproductions of Erin Hanson's artwork that are as close to the original as possible with modern technology.
How do 3D Textured Replicas compare to canvas prints?
A canvas print is a scanned photograph of an Erin Hanson original printed onto canvas using one layer of ink. You have the actual texture of the canvas with a canvas print, but the brushstroke texture is flat. Erin has been using her scanner to create a new level of quality for her 2D canvas prints. Here is an example of a canvas print (left), and as you can see, there is a beautiful illusion of texture.
Are the replicas varnished?
Erin Yes, Erin Hanson's 3D Textured Replicas are varnished with a UV-protective layer of varnish. The gloss as been adjusted to be as close to the original paintings as possible. You can see in the photo here the replica is on the bottom, held in front of the original (top.)
The varnish layer also provides a layer of scuff and dirt protection for your replica. It is still important to keep your replica out of direct sunlight, to protect your replica from fading. (This is true of any oil painting, replica, or giclee print.)
