About the Painting: An early painting of Arches National Park, here you can see how Hanson was experimenting to figure out how to make the colors in her paint as saturated and bright as the landscapes she saw in person. I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. Red rock cliffs reach high into the sky around me, and all around me is silent except for the moving sound of water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood leaves. I walk in and out of shadow beneath the overhanging boughs, my mind completely at peace. This painting captures all my love for this landscape. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. Hanson has always been drawn to the dramatic in landscapes, and nothing is as dramatic as the wide-open desertscapes and majestic buttes of Utah and Arizona. Shaggy palms stand proudly before the jagged mountains of Anza Borrego State Park. These palms mark the entrance of the local camping ground. About the painting: After seeing photos of Delicate Arch, Hanson made the journey to Arches to see the amazing rock formations for herself. She has since explored Arches National Park a half dozen times, each time finding something new in the changing desert. This was one of the first paintings Hanson created of Delicate Arch. This painting was created on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. It has been framed in a gold floater frame.

She thought at the time she might focus entirely on the abstract nature of the desert, but instead she fell in love with painting the wide open vistas and landscapes that would dominate her portfolio in later years.

"Crack in the Rock" was one of the first paintings Erin Hanson ever painted in the style of Open Impressionism, painted while she was developing her style and rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Her style of painting in distinct brushstrokes separated in mosaic-like shapes was developed in her attempt to capture the planes and dark cracks in the rock faces she loved to climb. Erin's iconic style "Open Impressionism" is now taught in art schools worldwide, and her pieces hang in the permanent collections of many museums in the United States. This rare painting was made available for us to sell on consignment. This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.

I created this painting during the first year I was rock climbing in Red Rock Canyon and painting "one painting a week." This discipline of creating (and finishing) a new painting every week is what turned me from an amateur painter into a professional. This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.
