Whether crimson, vermilion, cardinal or scarlet, red has a long and rich history in art. Van Gogh famously employed red lead in many of his pieces and later Matisse convinced his friend Renoir to use cadmium red, which the Impressionist first resisted, but was ultimately enchanted with. The raw and vibrant energy of red, and its effect upon viewers, is known well to Erin Hanson who does not shy away from its bold application and emotional impact.

Every spring I visit Woodburn's tulip fields for the color and inspiration. Bands of vibrant blooms stretch far into the distance, with distant blue mountains all around (and sometimes even a glimpse of Mt Hood). I love capturing the structured tulip shapes and soft green colors of the leaves on canvas.

When you first enter Arches National Park, one of my favorite vistas to paint is immediately to your left-hand side. You can see beautiful fins of red rock sandstone overlapping into the far distance. It is most beautiful at dawn. This painting captures the scene with luscious colors of pink and orange.
