Paintings with Greens

The Impressionists were well known for their use of complementary colors to bring depth to an object and create shadows in their paintings. This technique of placing complementary colored brush strokes side-by-side would imbue life to an object. They sought to capture not only the essence of what they were looking at but the general mood and atmosphere as well. Green, whether used to complement other colors or as the primary focus in a verdant landscape, is a principal hue in many of the works of Erin Hanson. Green can be used as a backdrop to make other colors pop -- like a brilliant sky peeking between branches or rows of cadmium yellow autumn vines interspersed with apple-green grass.

Every spring I visit Woodburn's tulip fields for the color and inspiration. Bands of vibrant blooms stretch far into the distance, with distant blue mountains all around (and sometimes even a glimpse of Mt Hood). Every time I paint a water lily pond, I am inspired by something new. In this piece, I wanted to capture the warm reflections of light coming down from the top of the pond. I love the contrast between the gold and green reflections and the rich ultramarine of the sky reflection. The thick, impressionistic brush strokes capture the delicate and ever-changing light of the scene.

This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. The dark shadows of the green leaves make the lighter golden leaves pop with life and vivacity. Thickly applied strokes of oil paint add dimension to the leaves.

Driving slowly along the Seine River on a French riverboat, I watched the dawn slowly lighten the sky to a glowing apricot color. The reflections in the Seine created interesting patterns in the smooth ripples of the water.

I went to Kyoto, Japan, to photograph the cherry blossoms this spring, and I saw many Japanese maple trees with brand new, bright green leaves just beginning to emerge. Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.

When I visited Arles to see van Gogh's stomping grounds, I went to as many olive groves as I could. I found several very old groves -- one boasted several "centennial" trees over one hundred years old. I was inspired by their gnarled branches and unique coloring, just as van Gogh was. Here is a painting of an olive grove near Arles, in southern France.

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

I was giving a speech before doing a live demonstration in Scottsdale, and I was explaining to the audience how I select specific items from the landscape to focus on, in order to give a cohesive message and composition in my painting -- when I had the perfect idea of what I should paint for them the following day: I painted the palo verdes trees that were right outside the Spirit of the West museum in Scottsdale. Here is the completed painting. I demonstrated how I used complementary colors to make the greens of the palos verdes pop and come alive, and how I used motion within the composition to keep the eyes moving throughout the painting. Every choice made during painting, such as which trees to focus on, the colors, the position of the trees -- everything revolved around the central idea "look how green those trees are!"
