Paintings of France

Erin Hanson traveled to France to follow in the footsteps of the Impressionists and see the landscapes and vistas they painted. She started out in Paris, visiting many of the parks the early impressionists and post-impressionists were inspired to paint. Then she took a river boat along the Seine River, stopping in Giverny to see Monet's Garden and Rouen to see "Monet's" cathedral, and ending in Le Havre and Etretat. From the cliffs of Normandy, she traveled south to the vineyards of Bordeaux and found the water lily farm that supplied Monet with his water lilies, still in business breeding hundreds of varieties of water lilies. From Bordeaux she traveled east through Provence, exploring the different places van Gogh lived, from Arles to Saint-Remy-de-Provence, where she saw his room in the asylum. She visited Aix-en-Provence, where Cezanne lived, and saw the mountain he painted so many times, from the very park Cezanne stood in and painted. Erin next visited the high plateaus of eastern Provence, where the lavender and sunflower fields grow against the dramatic backdrop of the Swiss Alps. The trip ended in the warm Mediterranean winds of the French Riviera. Erin woke up before dawn each day, catching the golden hour and sunset hours as she moved across France. Needless to say, Erin acquired a lifetime of inspiration from her trip, and you can see the paintings she created here.

Every time I paint a water lily pond, I am inspired by something new. In this piece, I wanted to capture the warm reflections of light coming down from the top of the pond. I love the contrast between the gold and green reflections and the rich ultramarine of the sky reflection. The thick, impressionistic brush strokes capture the delicate and ever-changing light of the scene.

Painting water lily pads is a study in contrasts. The lily pads reflect a muted version of the sky's color overhead, while the water reflects the shadows of the trees as well as the sky. When sky-lit water lilies appear against a reflected shadow, there is a beautiful contrast of color and shape. Gentle ripples add interesting effects to play with as well.

Etretat, France, was famously painted by Monet. In Monet's words, “Étretat is becoming more and more amazing….the beach with all its fine boats; it is superb, and I am enraged not to be more skillful in rendering all this. I would need two hands and hundreds of canvases.” Monet inspired me to visit Etretat this year, and I was likewise amazed by the brilliant colors, beautiful compositions, and abundant wildflowers. This petite painting captures a view from the south side of Etretat.

The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

Driving slowly along the Seine River on a French riverboat, I watched the dawn slowly lighten the sky to a glowing apricot color. The reflections in the Seine created interesting patterns in the smooth ripples of the water.

I discovered this sunflower field nestled among the rolling hills of lavender flowers in Valensole, France (in Provence). The sun was just peeking over the horizon, drenching the landscape in saturated hues of reddish-gold. When I paint, I place my brush strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas.

Exploring southern France, I was inspired by the high plateaus in Provence, which are covered in endless lavender fields. Tucked among the lavender fields, I discovered this field of sunflowers right as the sun came up over the mountains. The rich, saturated colors of early morning are captured in this oil painting, while thick, lavish brush strokes bring to life the beauty of the sunflowers.

Aix-en-Provence is a beautiful town in the south of France, where you can see the mountain made famous by post-impressionist Cezanne. Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.

This summer, I took a river boat cruise along the Seine to get inspiration from the many places the first impressionists painted, and I then traveled all across France, from Etretat to Provence, gathering inspiration. This painting captures the beautiful lavender fields of Provence, captured during the golden light of dawn. The stone house nestled among the cypress trees demanded to be included in the painting.

After immersing myself in the beauty of Monet's Garden and seeing his original water lily paintings in several different art museums in France, I was inspired to create my own large-scale oil painting of water lilies. After seeing his garden in person, I realized that the squiggly lines in his pieces were reflections of weeping willow trees. This made me look at water reflections in a whole new light.

Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

When I visited Arles to see van Gogh's stomping grounds, I went to as many olive groves as I could. I found several very old groves -- one boasted several "centennial" trees over one hundred years old. I was inspired by their gnarled branches and unique coloring, just as van Gogh was. Here is a painting of an olive grove near Arles, in southern France.

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

A few weeks ago, I was in a riverboat cruising slowly along the Seine River near Giverny, France. I woke up at 5 AM and saw the early glimmer of pre-dawn outside my window. I went out onto the deck, and for two hours, I watched the long golden hour slowly burn the sky with hues of pink and copper. This painting captures the reflections of the Seine I saw that morning.

I created this painting during a live painting demonstration on a cruise boat floating along the Seine River, near Giverny, France. Sounds unreal, doesn't it? While I painted, we drifted past ancient castles mounted atop limestone cliffs, quaint thatched-roof towns with Gothic temples towering high above, and little families of swans swimming down the river alongside us. This painting captures the water lilies in Monet's Garden.
