Inspired by van Gogh's love for sunflowers and Monet's garden (he created his own water lily garden so he could paint in his own backyard), I planted my own sunflower field last spring. This is a painting of a sunflower bouquet gathered from my field. I searched for heirloom seeds that would grow the large-headed sunflowers that make such great paintings. I draped an orange cloth behind the sunflowers for a moody, impressionistic look. My brush strokes are laid down in thick, expressive strokes, and I used a limited palette of only five oil paint colors.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

This year I grew my own sunflower garden, and I tested out a dozen different varieties of heirloom blooms. This is my first painting of the sunflower harvest this year. "Sunflowers on Turquoise" is an original oil painting on linen board, done in Erin Hanson's signature Open Impressionism style. This is a special piece I created for <i>The Orange Show</i>, in the spirit of making the orange/yellow colors pop by creating a background entirely of blue and purple. The sunflowers are captured here in vivid shades that come alive on the canvas, the brush strokes thick and impressionistic. When I was ten years old, one of my favorite things to paint in oils was the roses and other flowers from my mother's garden, and it was great to re-visit the floral still life concept. This painting was done on 2"-deep canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. This piece has been framed in a gold floater frame to set off the colors in the painting. Exhibited <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ErinHansonTheOrangeShow"><i>The Orange Show</i></a>, The Erin Hanson Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. 2016.
