Early Works

Erin Hanson began painting in her iconic Open Impressionism style when she began rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon. Through the process of painting the rocks she was climbing, with their flat planes and shapes, sharply defined cracks, and bright sandstone colors, Erin developed her techniques of Open Impressionism. This collection of early works shows some examples of her first foray into Open Impressionism.

"Crack in the Rock" was one of the first paintings Erin Hanson ever painted in the style of Open Impressionism, painted while she was developing her style and rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Her style of painting in distinct brushstrokes separated in mosaic-like shapes was developed in her attempt to capture the planes and dark cracks in the rock faces she loved to climb. This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.

This rare painting was made available for us to sell on consignment. This painting captures Red Rock Canyon with an abstracted style. "Willow Spring" is a traditional ("trad") climbing destination in Red Rock. The work was done on 3/4" stretched canvas, and the piece arrives framed in a new 3.5"-wide black and gold plein air frame.

Exhibited: <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West</i> at Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah, in 2024. About the Painting: This was one of the first paintings Hanson created of Valley of Fire State Park, where her first landscape exhibition was held in 2007. In this early painting you can see Hanson experimenting with using brush strokes to capture the form and texture of the rocks.

The artist has always been drawn to the contrast of green desert plants against the pink and orange rocks and sand of the Southwest.

About the Painting: When driving from Los Angeles on her move to Las Vegas, before she ever saw Red Rock Canyon, Hanson was so inspired by the stark, rocky landscape around her that she decided she would focus on landscapes exclusively in her artwork. This is the first painting she created of these impressive Nevada buttes.
