Paintings of Canyon de Chelly

Arizona's Canyon de Chelly is on tribal lands, and one can feel the spirituality and history the moment one lays eyes on the verdant canyon and red rock spires. Erin Hanson has explored this national monument several times and has painted the red rock landscape throughout the seasons. Hanson's Canyon de Chelly paintings share an impressionistic view of red rock vistas, spring panoramas, and the play of dawn light across the canyon. These western paintings capture the essence of the ancient rock formations found in Canyon de Chelly.

Canyon de Chelly is one of my favorite National Monuments in Arizona. Every year I find a new way to explore the red rock canyon, becoming newly inspired every time. This painting was created after an early spring visit, the red canyon floor becoming dusted with a pale spring grass. The olives and cottonwoods follow the winding wash, casting long cool shadows across the canyon floor. The brush strokes in this painting are loose and impressionistic, with a delicate stained glass quality. The oil painting is full of movement and excitement, bringing to life the transient light of early dawn. This painting was created on gallery-depth canvas, with the edges painted all around as a continuation of the piece. You may hang it without framing as desired.
