Paintings with Blues

The first permanent blue pigment was created by the Egyptians in 2200 BC using the precious stone lapis lazuli. Due to its scarcity, they ultimately turned to chemistry and created pigment by heating limestone, sand, and copper. Blue continued in the tradition of art through the impressionists and post-impressionists, like in Vincent van Gogh's classic Starry Night. From soothing, cool blue to high-energy, electric blues, Erin Hanson utilizes the color in a myriad of backdrops, and subjects and often as a contrast to vibrant yellows and blazing oranges.

Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

Highway 1 has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a painter. I first started painting the crystal turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean about twelve years ago when I started exploring Paso Robles and the coastal region between Hearst Castle and Big Sur. I just returned from my second trip to Japan, this time to find inspiration among the blossoming cherry trees, known in Japan as "sakura." Japan's cherry blossom viewing is a centuries-old cultural tradition. During the few weeks of peak bloom, cherry flower festivals take place all across the country, with millions flocking to see the transient blooms. Often accompanied by picnics, parties, and saki, the viewing of cherry blossoms is called "hanami," which means "viewing flowers." This oil painting captures a dusk-blue sky behind the pale pink/white blooms of the Yoshino cherry tree. The brush strokes are loose and impressionistic, in my contemporary style of impressionism known as "Open Impressionism."

After exploring California's Highway 1 up and down countless times, I have picked out my favorite section of coastline -- just north of Point Sur (which is between Big Sur and Carmel.) This coastline has everything: expansive white sandy beaches, crystal aquamarine waters, and rocky outcroppings casting long blue shadows. It has everything I love about creating coastal paintings.
