I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. Red rock cliffs reach high into the sky around me, and all around me is silent except for the moving sound of water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood leaves. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. The turquoise waters seem to capture the very light from the darkening sky. I used thick, expressive brush strokes to capture the red rocks and mountains of Zion, laying my strokes side by side without overlapping. Driving through the open plains of Utah's high desert one morning, I came atop a small hill overlooking a wide expanse of landscape in every direction. Hiking the 50-mile trans-Zion trek led me to Angel's Landing from a unique perspective - down from the high canyon walls above, instead of up the usual switchback hike to Angel's Landing. This painting was inspired by a hike I did to Delicate Arch (in Arches National Park) a few years ago. To catch the early morning light on Delicate Arch, I awoke at 3am to begin the hike up the sandstone slabs that culminated in the rock formations around the arch. The brilliant colors and high vantage point, surrounded by the quiet solitude of the park, have been ingrained in my mind ever since. "Delicate Arch" was created on 1-1/2" canvas, with the sides of the canvas painted as a continuation of the painting. The piece arrives framed in a 23kt gold leaf floater frame.

Aspen trees are alive with light and color in this original oil painting.
