Paintings with Purples

Purple has long been associated with royalty. "Tyrian purple" pigment came from a rare form of sea snail and became worth its weight in gold. It took two hundred and fifty thousand mollusks to create one ounce of the pigment. As ages passed, new ways were found to create the brilliant color and it eventually became more common and widely available. It was Gustav Klimt who famously layered purples and lavenders with 24kt gold leaf in his classic works.  Erin Hanson has employed purples with complementary greens or earth tones to create many bold and stunning works.

Wandering up and down the steep, winding roads between the high plateaus of Provence in search of lavender fields, I discovered this beautiful field one day. The quaint, idyllic landscape, spotted with cobblestone houses and twisty cypress trees, was the perfect scene to paint.

The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape.
