Home to a rugged coastline, vast deserts, farmland, and a portion of the Pacific Temperate Rainforest, Oregon's landscapes are varied and beautiful. Erin Hanson has painted many aspects of Oregon's natural areas, from famous spots like Haystack Rock, Smith Rock, and the Cascade Range to local vineyards, tulip farms, and the maples in her own backyard. Inspired by impressionist landscape artists from the northern Americas like Tom Thomson, Hanson takes on the wilds of Oregon with brush and canvas in this collection of Oregon-inspired landscape paintings.

Every spring I visit Woodburn's tulip fields for the color and inspiration. Bands of vibrant blooms stretch far into the distance, with distant blue mountains all around (and sometimes even a glimpse of Mt Hood). I love capturing the structured tulip shapes and soft green colors of the leaves on canvas.

As much as I travel around the world searching for inspiration to paint, I find the most beautiful landscapes in my own backyard... this painting captures the rolling hills, evergreen trees, and picturesque vineyards of the Willamette Valley and the Dundee Hills. This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. The dark shadows of the green leaves make the lighter golden leaves pop with life and vivacity. Thickly applied strokes of oil paint add dimension to the leaves.

Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. This painting has a beautiful simplicity and movement that gives me the same feeling of peace as when I viewed the landscape in person.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. Thick, expressive brush strokes laid side by side without blending create a highly textured oil painting that is alive with motion and vibrant color.

The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!
