Paintings of Fall Colors

The first step to any painting is finding inspiration out of doors. Erin Hanson seeks secluded vistas of natural beauty and travels around searching for autumn color in national parks, wine country regions, nature gardens, and scenic drives. She goes leaf peeping across the Colorado Plateau, through the Rockies, all the way to the east coast, and once as far as Kyoto, Japan, to photograph the famous Japanese maples that grow in the numerous parks and temples around Kyoto. Yellow golds, blazing oranges, burning reds, regal purples, and earthy browns are laid down in thick, expressive brush strokes, in Erin's signature Open Impressionism style.

As much as I travel around the world searching for inspiration to paint, I find the most beautiful landscapes in my own backyard... this painting captures the rolling hills, evergreen trees, and picturesque vineyards of the Willamette Valley and the Dundee Hills. My gallery and studio is located in McMinnville, in the heart of beautiful wine country, and October is one of the most beautiful months to enjoy Oregon wine country.

This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. The dark shadows of the green leaves make the lighter golden leaves pop with life and vivacity. Thickly applied strokes of oil paint add dimension to the leaves.
