Paintings of Big Bend National Park

Texas's Big Bend National Park is right on the border of the lone star state and Mexico. That makes it sound like a desolate place, but instead, it is filled with diverse and colorful flora and fauna throughout the park. Erin Hanson visited in the spring and was delighted to find a vast land replete with wildflowers, limestone canyons, flowing waterways, and one of her favorite subjects, the ocotillo. Each piece in Hanson's Big Bend collection shares her impressionistic view of the Texas landscape. Her bold use of color and unique painting technique brings out the spring hues of Texas. Many of these paintings were on display during her solo exhibition at The Museum of the Big Bend in 2018.

Big Bend National Park
A peaceful dawn breaks quietly over the desert landscape of Big Bend National Park. The ocotillo stand gracefully in the foreground, their stalks green after the springtime rains, showing their red, bird-like flowers. The brush strokes are loose and impressionistic, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. "Desert Ocotillo" was created on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. The piece has been framed in a custom-made, gold floater frame. This painting was exhibited in <i><a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/event/ErinHansonAmericanVistas" target="_blank">Erin Hanson: American Vistas</i></a> at the Nancy Cawdrey Studios and Gallery in Whitefish, Montana, 2019.

This is the first painting I have done of Big Bend National Park. I visited Big Bend in the spring and was amazed by the multitude of ocotillo and beautiful spring colors. My favorite part of the park was the abstract shapes of jagged buttes rising dramatically above the desert floor.
