As much as I travel around the world searching for inspiration to paint, I find the most beautiful landscapes in my own backyard... this painting captures the rolling hills, evergreen trees, and picturesque vineyards of the Willamette Valley and the Dundee Hills. My gallery and studio is located in McMinnville, in the heart of beautiful wine country, and October is one of the most beautiful months to enjoy Oregon wine country.

This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. The dark shadows of the green leaves make the lighter golden leaves pop with life and vivacity. Thickly applied strokes of oil paint add dimension to the leaves.

This petite work captures a beautiful sunrise seen from one of Montecito's beautiful beaches. Montecito (near Santa Barbara) has beautiful coastlines edged with dramatic boulders and elegant, long-leafed palm trees. Dodging the waves to get around a rocky outcropping (and only getting completely soaked once), I found this secluded beach and watched the sun rise over the distant mountain range.

I discovered this sunflower field nestled among the rolling hills of lavender flowers in Valensole, France (in Provence). The sun was just peeking over the horizon, drenching the landscape in saturated hues of reddish-gold. When I paint, I place my brush strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas.

After immersing myself in the beauty of Monet's Garden and seeing his original water lily paintings in several different art museums in France, I was inspired to create my own large-scale oil painting of water lilies. After seeing his garden in person, I realized that the squiggly lines in his pieces were reflections of weeping willow trees. This made me look at water reflections in a whole new light.

Driving the curving roads into Elk (just south of Mendocino), I came suddenly upon this vineyard in full autumn glory -- pumpkin oranges and sunflower yellows. I love it when vineyards are planted so that the rows of vines seem to overlap and form contrasting patterns in the hills. It brings me into the painting, letting my eye explore the contours of the sloping hillsides. This painting captures everything I love about painting California wine country.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

The 2017 "super bloom" in southern California caused thousands of visitors to roam the desert and mountainsides, photographing the bright, abundant flowers. I explored the super bloom in Borrego Springs, and they were indeed the most beautiful I have ever seen in the desert! Sunflowers come in many different varieties. This year I am planting a dozen different varieties in my garden so I can paint them later this year. I love the central heads of these sunflowers: bright green, surrounded by a dark orange-red circle (the head of a sunflower is actually composed of tightly packed flowers called disk florets.) Sunflowers are a lot of fun to paint -- their long, curving petals catch the light in interesting patterns, and the bright yellow and gold hues are a beautiful contrast to a blue sky or a bed of rich green leaves.
