The Red Rock Show 2018

In 2018, Erin Hanson released a new collection of works inspired by the red rock desert on the Colorado Plateau, also known as the Four Corners region. Her vibrant paintings breathe fresh color into traditional Western landscapes, and each painting represents her unique view of the natural world. Warm hues of golden orange contrast with amethyst shadows and blue desert skies. From Arches Nation Park to the Grand Canyon, the sunrises and sunsets of the red rock desert are captured with Hanson's expressive brushwork.

After watching dawn break over Bryce Canyon, I began hiking down the steep trail into the canyon’s depths. It had snowed a few days earlier, and the white strips of snow stood out in stark contrast against the deep orange and red sandstone. My favorite time to visit Arches National Park is after the spring bloom when the dark red earth becomes covered in a bright green plant life. The contrast is so striking, especially when seen in the early dawn, when the whole landscape is bathed in ethereal light. Hiking out of the Grand Canyon last October, I was able to watch dusk fall over the canyon from a perch about 2/3rd up from the canyon floor. There is about a one-mile vertical elevation change in the Grand Canyon - quite a hike with a pack on your back! This painting captures the restful scenery and sense of wide-open space you experience here. This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. I started hiking down into the Grand Canyon one early morning, 2 hours before dawn. The trailhead began way back from the main canyon, a few miles' hike from the first uninterrupted view where you could see the wide expanse of the canyon. As I hiked along with my two brothers, large packs on our backs, I watched the sky slowly lighten above us. Eventually, we no longer needed our headlamps, and I could make out the dim shape of the steep cliff beside us. As the hour of daybreak approached nearer, I started jogging anxiously forward, hoping to catch that magical moment of dawn hitting the Grand Canyon. The trail kept switching back and forth behind a large outcropping in the cliff, and I could not get a full view of the canyon. In the distance, I could see the sun starting to hit the first tips of the distant peaks. I urged my brothers forward, trotting forward at a near gallop now, and when the trail finally led me around the final switchback and out into an unimpeded view of the canyon, I skidded to a stop. This is the vision I saw: an ancient manzanita tree catching the bright rays of the sun, mere minutes after daybreak, with the wide expanse of the canyon as the backdrop. In my painting can see the sunlight striking the top of the boulder next to the trail -- five minutes later and the entire trail was bathed in warm light. Five minutes after that, and the Grand Canyon itself was fully lit from top to bottom, and the dramatic and mystical period of dawn had passed. The colors changed rapidly from brilliant gold and purple to a dull orange and brown. I was so happy I had made it to this spot in the trail in time, and I took about a hundred photos during those subsequent minutes, recording the sun slowly descending down the canyon walls. This painting captures the moment of first light I experienced as I came around that final bend in the Grand Canyon. This painting was done over a unique underpainting: where the sunlight is hitting the mountains and tree, I applied 24kt gold leaf beneath the oil paint. The effect is subtle, but at the right angle you can see a little glimmer of gold peeking through the brushstrokes. Purple irises bloom unexpectedly near Oak Creek in Sedona, Arizona. I was immediately drawn to the contrast of the purple and green flowers against the dusky pink desert background. This piece is also a nod to Vincent van Gogh -- his irises painting was the reason I wanted to be an artist when I started painting in oils at the young age of 8. Anyone who has seen a sunset over Monument Valley will never forget it. As the world slowly darkens and the landscape hushes, the sky celebrates the closing of another day with brilliant hues and cloud formations. Monument Valley is found on the Navajo National Reservation. The Valley is also one of the most filmed spots in the history of filmmaking. The valley was hailed "John Wayne country" for appearing in no less than five of his movies. It also served as a backdrop for an iconic scene in Forest Gump. "There are certain places in the world that seem like special effects, they don't seem real," said film historian Scott Eyman. "They're too perfect. And the first time you come here, you see it through John Ford's eyes."
