Paintings with Purples

Purple has long been associated with royalty. "Tyrian purple" pigment came from a rare form of sea snail and became worth its weight in gold. It took two hundred and fifty thousand mollusks to create one ounce of the pigment. As ages passed, new ways were found to create the brilliant color and it eventually became more common and widely available. It was Gustav Klimt who famously layered purples and lavenders with 24kt gold leaf in his classic works. Erin Hanson has employed purples with complementary greens or earth tones to create many bold and stunning works.

Painting water lily pads is a study in contrasts. The lily pads reflect a muted version of the sky's color overhead, while the water reflects the shadows of the trees as well as the sky. When sky-lit water lilies appear against a reflected shadow, there is a beautiful contrast of color and shape. Gentle ripples add interesting effects to play with as well.

The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

Exploring southern France, I was inspired by the high plateaus in Provence, which are covered in endless lavender fields. Tucked among the lavender fields, I discovered this field of sunflowers right as the sun came up over the mountains. Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape.

This summer, I took a river boat cruise along the Seine to get inspiration from the many places the first impressionists painted, and I then traveled all across France, from Etretat to Provence, gathering inspiration. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. The turquoise waters seem to capture the very light from the darkening sky. I used thick, expressive brush strokes to capture the red rocks and mountains of Zion, laying my strokes side by side without overlapping.

This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.

Hiking through Point Lobos as the sun began to set, the whole world changed from vivid hues of coppery orange to a soft palette of lavender, turquoise, and buttercream.
