This painting was inspired by my annual trip to Schreiner's Iris Gardens in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The overlapping layers of multi-hued blooms remind me of Monet's flowering gardens. This little group of pale orange peonies caught my attention, and I just had to paint their open petals and exquisite colors.

Norway's grand, romantic vistas have inspired a whole <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/portfolio?col=the-norway-show-2026">new collection</a> of paintings. This piece depicts the fall colors I found in a valley near Geirangerfjord. The movement of color is captured with thick, impressionistic brushstrokes in my Open Impressionism style.

The first blooms of spring cling delicately to a Japanese cherry tree in this painting inspired by a recent trip to Kyoto, Japan. The sakura blossoms symbolize hope and renewal of life. As the first harbinger of spring, I see these tiny blossoms as the first points of joyful light after a long, overcast winter. "Sakura Moon" was painted over 24kt gold leaf. The gold glints through the paint strokes on the moon and between the cherry blossoms. The subtle glimmer effect can be seen when you move around the painting and see it from different directions.

The first time I saw Mt Rainier, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mountain. It reared high overhead, filling the senses. I have been doing shows in La Quinta and Palm Springs for almost twenty years. Every time I return to the desert, I am blown away again by the beautiful colors of the mountains and palm trees—especially during early morning golden hour and sunset. This painting captures a view from Highway 111, where you can see the San Jacinto mountains dusted in snow in the distance, peeking between the lanky palms.

I think my favorite view of the Grand Canyon is from Hopi Point on the South Rim. From here, you are more isolated from the crowds, especially at dawn. You can see all the way down to the turquoise waters of the Colorado River. Since Hopi Point is on a protrusion out into the canyon, it feels like you are surrounded by almost 360 degrees of stunning canyon. As the sun slowly clears the horizon, the colors and shadows quickly change during Arizona's desert golden hour light.

Saguaro National Park is one of my favorite places to visit in Arizona. The towering cacti, blooming scrub, and ocotillo are so beautiful in the early morning light. This painting captures my love for the desert with thick, impressionistic brushstrokes of oil paint that create a mosaic of texture and light across the canvas. In my Open Impressionist technique, I try not to overlap my brushstrokes, which keeps my paintings fresh and painterly.

Driving north along Highway 1 from Cambria, on the way to Hearst Castle, you see some of the most beautiful scenery along the Pacific Coast. I have always been drawn to the romantic shapes and multi-colored bark of the eucalyptus tree, and the way these trees were framed by the summer-colored hills beyond made me pull my van around and circle back so I could get some reference shots to paint.

I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. I used to drive by this hazelnut farm every day on my way to my gallery. The light in winter is so special--a limited palette of blues and golds can be used to paint an entire landscape. Soft hues of caramel and buttermilk are reflected in the calm waters of a Norwegian fjord. I first saw the potential for this painting while driving along a road that bordered this fjord. I pulled the car over and scrambled down the bank, pushing my way through pine trees and undergrowth. When I got to the water's edge, I saw this perfect composition of curving waters and reflected cliffsides. I captured this scene of the warm light of golden hour with impasto, painterly brush strokes. There is one grove of cypress trees near Carmel that is the most beautiful grove of cypress trees in the whole Monterey Peninsula. I visit them every time I go to Monterey. I must have painted them a dozen times already, but I love capturing their graceful branches in changing light and changing seasons. You may recognize these trees, if you find yourself driving on 17 Mile Drive.

Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula was one of the highlights of my trip to Washington. I got there right at the peak of golden hour, and I watched the sky change into a rainbow of fiery hues. Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.

I was giving a speech before doing a live demonstration in Scottsdale, and I was explaining to the audience how I select specific items from the landscape to focus on, in order to give a cohesive message and composition in my painting -- when I had the perfect idea of what I should paint for them the following day: I painted the palo verdes trees that were right outside the Spirit of the West museum in Scottsdale. Here is the completed painting. I demonstrated how I used complementary colors to make the greens of the palos verdes pop and come alive, and how I used motion within the composition to keep the eyes moving throughout the painting. Every choice made during painting, such as which trees to focus on, the colors, the position of the trees -- everything revolved around the central idea "look how green those trees are!"

The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. I can't pass up the opportunity to paint a dramatic skyscape when I have the chance! This painting was inspired by my explorations this spring through Texas Hill Country. The buttery yellow color of the sky was too tempting not to paint.
