Paintings of Fruit Trees in Bloom

Impressionist painters have always been inspired by blooming fruit trees. From van Gogh's almond blossoms (often mistaken for cherry tree blooms) to Claude Monet's spring paintings of fruit trees in bloom, the delicate petals of pears, apples, cherries, and almonds against a blue sky form the quintessential image of an impressionism landscape painting.

The springtime cherry blossom ("sakura") season in Japan is one of the most beautiful things I have experienced. The ancient tradition of cherry blossom viewing is woven into the tapestry of modern Japan, and the whole country seems to take pause and revel in the beautiful but transient flowers. When I was photographing the cherry blossoms in Japan, I came across the most beautiful flowering quince I have ever seen. The bush was covered in flowers varying in color from pure white to blush to deep pink. This painting captures the beauty of these Japanese flowers with thick, expressive brush strokes of luscious oil paint.

I just returned from my second trip to Japan, this time to find inspiration among the blossoming cherry trees, known in Japan as "sakura." Japan's cherry blossom viewing is a centuries-old cultural tradition. During the few weeks of peak bloom, cherry flower festivals take place all across the country, with millions flocking to see the transient blooms. Often accompanied by picnics, parties, and saki, the viewing of cherry blossoms is called "hanami," which means "viewing flowers." This oil painting captures a dusk-blue sky behind the pale pink/white blooms of the Yoshino cherry tree. The brush strokes are loose and impressionistic, in my contemporary style of impressionism known as "Open Impressionism."

My property in Oregon wine country has a grove of 30-year-old apple trees. By the end of the week, the darker pink weeping cherry trees were also blooming. I eagerly chased the sunlight and found enough inspiration to paint a thousand paintings.
